Mental fatigue independent of boredom and sleepiness does not impact self-paced physical or cognitive performance in normoxia or hypoxia

چکیده

This study investigated the individual and combined effects of mental fatigue (MF) hypoxia (HYP) on physical cognitive performance. Fifteen males (24 ± 3 years) completed one familiarization session six experimental trials, including: 1) normoxia (0.209 FiO2) no MF; 2) with 3) mild normobaric HYP (0.13 4) 5) severe (0.10 6) MF. Each condition included a 15-min self-paced time trial, followed by 60-s isometric maximal voluntary contraction biceps brachii. MF was induced using 16-min individualized test prior to exercise Following each participants performed Tower Hanoi test. A main effect observed average power output, oxygen consumption muscle oxygenation (P ≤ 0.004), ≥ 0.599). Voluntary activation brachii also reduced in (68.42 5.64%, P = 0.039). No or performance 0.138). impacted performance, whilst had

Psychophysiological investigation of vigilance decrement: boredom or cognitive fatigue?

The vigilance decrement has been described as a slowing in reaction times or an increase in error rates as an effect of time-on-task during tedious monitoring tasks. This decrement has been alternatively ascribed to either withdrawal of the supervisory attentional system, due to underarousal caused by the insufficient workload, or to a decreased attentional capacity and thus the impossibility t...

Hypoxia or in situ normoxia: The stem cell paradigm.

Although O(2) concentrations are considerably lowered in vivo, depending on the tissue and cell population in question (some cells need almost anoxic environment for their maintenance) the cell and tissue cultures are usually performed at atmospheric O(2) concentration (20-21%). As an instructive example, the relationship between stem cells and micro-environmental/culture oxygenation has been r...

Mental fatigue impairs physical performance in humans.

Mental fatigue is a psychobiological state caused by prolonged periods of demanding cognitive activity. Although the impact of mental fatigue on cognitive and skilled performance is well known, its effect on physical performance has not been thoroughly investigated. In this randomized crossover study, 16 subjects cycled to exhaustion at 80% of their peak power output after 90 min of a demanding...

Fatigue in Parkinson's disease is not related to excessive sleepiness or quality of sleep.

OBJECTIVES Many patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) suffer from non-motor symptoms like sleep disturbances, excessive daytime sleepiness and fatigue. The aim of our research was to explore whether fatigue is related to sleepiness and sleep problems, depression and functional status, controlled for age, gender and disease duration. METHODS The sample consisted of 78 PD patients from Eastern...

Intermittent normobaric hypoxia does not alter performance or erythropoietic markers in highly trained distance runners.

This study was designed to test the hypothesis that intermittent normobaric hypoxia at rest is a sufficient stimulus to elicit changes in physiological measures associated with improved performance in highly trained distance runners. Fourteen national-class distance runners completed a 4-wk regimen (5:5-min hypoxia-to-normoxia ratio for 70 min, 5 times/wk) of intermittent normobaric hypoxia (Hy...
